Yard or patio lighting should not be harsh but rather discreet; nonetheless the light should be sufficiently powerful. It is important to orchestrate the contrast and beam effects, and also to favor indirect, diffused light that is cost and energy efficient.

There exist different types of outdoor lighting fixtures to brighten up your outside spaces. Outdoor wall lights light up specific zones such as balconies or patios. Spotlights or landscape lights help you to find your way along a path in the night, such as walkways or driveways. Certain regulations must be followed when installing lighting in your yard. In the first place, the cables must be buried at a minimum of 60 cm (about 2 feet) underground, allowing only 30 cm (about a foot) visible for connecting to the electrical outlet. It must comply with the IP 44 system of protection, making it ideally suited to outdoor use.

Spotlighting vegetation is best done with a ground-based spot so as to create an impression of height. To light up a swimming pool, opt for built-in spots. The yard should not be completely doused in light; that would be a bit too excessive.
