Our lighting, seventies

Lighting designed in the 70s was charged with the anti-establishment attitude of the period marked by flashy bright light decoration. Society had become reserved; while certain continued on with their carefreeness of the Roaring Twenties, others were pessimistic faced with oil price shock, the economic crisis and political grievances. The design world followed in the steps of political unrest and adopted an anti-conformist style.

Somewhere between provocation and cultural freedom, the designed objects of the 70s were steeped in the spirit of rebellion. Flashy bright colors, synthetic materials, futuristic styles were all part of the lighting style during the 70s. At once imaginative and inventive, these objects put functionality on the back burner. Designers of the 70s were curious, looking for the novel and original.

Incarnating this concept of flashy bright light, the pendant lamp Bubbles from Emiliana Martinelli was created in 1973. They are very pop, but also contemporary and timeless.

Another icon of the 70s, the Atollo lamps designed in 1977 by the Italian designer Vico Magistretti for the lighting firm Oluce. Their shape is very elegant and unforgettable in the form of a mushroom. One more notable creation from the 70s: the Italian designer Fernando Cassetta proposed an entire collection of table lamps in the form of animals, notably the famous dog nightlight, which has now been reproduced using a 3D printer system.
